John 4:32-34

 

Excerpt: He called His descent the bread that came down from Heaven, and He furthermore stated that life comes by the consumption of His word. It is poetically called His flesh because, by legal requirement expressed in Deut 18, Christ was to hide in Jesus’ flesh, that He may ventriloquially declare to us His words more gently, and it is those words —the doctrines, which He also called His bread— that man must consume to win life. Remember, He also told His disciples that, 32 I have meat to eat that ye know not of … 34 … My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” —John 4:32-34 That meat —oblivious to the church yesterday— man must be fed today on our path to gospel finishment. So, it is settled: Meat, His clean meat, designates doctrines of which His Christian disciples were ignorant, and equally revealing is that to feed is the Bible metaphor which means to teach...
